I also totally agree about the reader being a vital role in literature.Melodyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08151339860580266808noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6275165298547340568.post-22330513863217163312011-06-10T22:37:18.452+01:002011-06-10T22:37:18.452+01:00The reader is definitely an important part of the ...The reader is definitely an important part of the equation. I had a friend tell me the other day a book I had lent her just wasn't for her, but she could see why I liked it, which got me to thinking about my tastes as a reader, which are wildly different than other people I know. This is pretty obvious, but was kind of revelatory for me.LBChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08565867574821169945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6275165298547340568.post-61389540834534661982011-06-10T21:41:00.707+01:002011-06-10T21:41:00.707+01:00We come into the world intent on finding narrative...We come into the world intent on finding narrative in everything, in the landscape, in the skies, in the faces of others, and, of course, in the images and words that our species create - Alberto Manguel, this I think is a wonderful description that rings true & corresponds with what Margaret Atwood said, liking your post a lot.@parridhlanternhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12793548943992250238noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6275165298547340568.post-81877204852097822302011-06-10T17:41:56.649+01:002011-06-10T17:41:56.649+01:00Great response! I overheard (pretended to ignore) comments a male co-worker was making to another male co-worker (who's more my friend) in the lunch room talking about how women are illogical. This was all based on his experience with his ex-wife. Because of our statuses in the company, I didn't want to get into an argument, so I pretended not to here. Thankfully, my friend said that his wife was the logical one in their relationship. It's true that your experiences effect how you read books, articles, etc., but they also effect how you live and interact with others.

Mine was also a long rambly post.Lonihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16248163148722597124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6275165298547340568.post-75334024075942761872011-06-10T13:59:05.874+01:002011-06-10T13:59:05.874+01:00Very nicely put. Someone else had called these experiences 'prejudices' but it all amounts to the same - experience, beliefs et al shape the way we respond to a text. Very often I've found myself being rather harsh about my reactions to some text or the other, while there have been others who have loved the same text. At the end so much is really involved in our reading experience.Songhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09707280327803432082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6275165298547340568.post-64071484766339857012011-06-10T11:59:18.917+01:002011-06-10T11:59:18.917+01:00Of course your friend at work is suggesting only &...Of course your friend at work is suggesting only "pretty" women are worth bothering with-I recently read a great short story by Edna Farber, "The Homely Heroine" in which she asks why to the women in literature all have to be beautiful to be worth writing about?Mel uhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08714473754458914681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6275165298547340568.post-17834640752434422602011-06-10T10:21:19.830+01:002011-06-10T10:21:19.830+01:00And it is amazing.

I really enjoyed the quote from Margaret Atwood as well.

I think it's true -- books either challenge or enhance our world view, so when we read, we are forced to either reject what we read or to incorporate it into our world view. Perhaps that's one reason that 1984 is one of my very favorite books, because it presented such a blatant challenge to my beliefs about love.

Great post!MedSchoolWifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00745408218333024946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6275165298547340568.post-77951585623108047112011-06-09T16:00:45.224+01:002011-06-09T16:00:45.224+01:00I love how you put it, that even people reading th...I love how you put it, that even people reading the same book are going to be having different experiences just based on who they are, what they think and where they've been.Redhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16456600806188531803noreply@blogger.com
